At the entrance to the mausoleum, dozens of activists had set up an art installation that included hundreds of Ukrainian flags and crosses for Ukrainians killed in the Russian invasion
Pro-Ukrainian activists blocked Russia’s ambassador to Poland today to lay a wreath at the mausoleum of Soviet soldiers in Warsaw, today when Russia celebrates Victory Daycommemorating the 78th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II.
According to AFP journalists, at the entrance to the mausoleum, dozens of activists had set up an art installation, which included hundreds of Ukrainian flags and crosses for Ukrainians killed in the Russian invasion launched by Moscow in February 2022.
In this facility there were also several models of residential buildings destroyed by Russian bombing in various Ukrainian cities.
Ambassador Sergey Andreevwho attempted to lay a wreath at the mausoleum, was confronted by the activists and eventually forced to leave the flowers at the entrance to the site.
“As you can see, we are faced with an obvious disturbance of public order. Unfortunately, for the second time, we were unable to lay wreaths at the monument dedicated to Soviet soldiers who died here in the war against fascism”Andreev stressed, condemning today’s event.
Last year, the Russian ambassador was again confronted by protesters at the same location, when activists threw a red substance at the diplomat.
Viktoria Pogrebiank, an activist with the pro-Ukrainian Euromaidan organization, told AFP that today’s protest action was aimed at “to see the consequences of the Russian war against Ukraine”.
“Of course, they will try to show that they are still fighting against fascism… In fact, they are the ones who revived fascism, to which they gave another name”he added.
Euromaidan activists also called on Poland to expel the Russian ambassador.
