The European Parliament voted today to accelerate the production of ammunition in the EU in order to replenish stocks in the arsenals of EU countries and to help Ukraine.

With 518 votes in favor, 59 votes against and 31 abstentions, MEPs agreed to expedite the legislative proposal on the Act in Support of Ammunition Production (ASAP), tabled by the European Commission on 3 May . The Commission’s legislative proposal foresees, among other things, €500 million in funding to increase the EU’s production capacity to one million shells per year.

According to Internal Market and Industry Commissioner Thierry Breton, with the co-financing from the Member States, the investment capacity to increase the production of the defense industry will reach one billion euros.

Parliament will appoint its negotiating team and vote on the bill during its next plenary session, which will take place on 31 May – 1 June in Brussels. MEPs will then start negotiations with the Council, with the aim of reaching a political agreement, which MEPs will assess at the July plenary session.
