Ukrainian armed forces shot down a Russian Kinzhal hypersonic missile using the US-made Patriot air defense system, the head of the delegation confirmed yesterday, Tuesday of the Pentagon.

“I can confirm that they did shoot down a Russian missile using the Patriot missile defense system. As you know, the system is part of a broader range of air defense capabilities that the United States and the international community have provided to Ukraine,” Brigadier General Patrick Ryder said during a press briefing.

However, Ryder refused to say which country supplierwith the missile array that shot down the hypersonic missile.

Patriot air defense systems have been used by the US against Iranian ballistic missiles in Iraq and Saudi Arabia, but this is the first time the system has shot down a hypersonic missile, Turkey’s state-run Anadolu news agency said.

“The US, our allies, our partners, will continue to send ground-based anti-aircraft capabilities and munitions to help Ukraine control its sovereign airspace and to help Ukraine defend its citizens from Russian cruise missiles and Iranian drones,” Ryder added.

Earlier yesterday, Tuesday, the Biden administration had promised 1.2 billion dollars on long-term military aid to Ukraine, including anti-aircraft systems and munitions.
