Ankara confirms first meeting with Armenian envoy in Moscow on Friday

by

Ankara today confirmed the meeting, the day after Friday in Moscow, of its special envoy with that of Armenia, both of whom were recently appointed to start a dialogue between the two countries.

Turkey and Armenia have a long history of conflict since the genocide of more than one million Armenians in 1915, which has been rekindled since 1993 due to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict between Armenia and Ankara, an ally of Ankara.

The first meeting between Serdar Kilic, former Turkish ambassador to Washington, and Ruben Rubinian, vice-president of the Armenian National Assembly, will take place in Moscow on Friday, the Turkish Foreign Minister confirmed to Agence France-Presse.

Ankara and Yerevan announced the appointment of Kilic and Rubinian in mid-December, a prelude to a normalization and the establishment of diplomatic relations between their two countries.

Turkey had also announced the forthcoming resumption of direct flights between the two capitals, which had been suspended since 2020, but without giving an exact date.

For its part, Armenia lifted its embargo on Turkish products, which has been in force for a year, since January 1st.

Armenia and Turkey have never established formal diplomatic relations. Their land borders have been closed since 1991.

Turkey refuses to recognize the genocide of 1915, the time of the Ottoman Empire, and speaks of “massacres on both sides.”

However, the Armenian authorities agreed to put this issue aside in order to facilitate the normalization of relations.
