Turkey’s Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said tonight that the Black Sea agreement to export Ukrainian grain could be extended for at least two more months as officials from the parties involved discuss the possibility at a meeting in Istanbul.

Russia says it will not extend the deal beyond May 18 unless its demands are met and barriers to exports of its own grain and fertilizer are lifted.

Cavusoglu made these statements while speaking to reporters upon his return from Moscow. As he said, the Black Sea agreement was among the issues he discussed with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, and that he hopes a positive result will be achieved in the talks that started today in Istanbul and will continue tomorrow, Thursday.

“I think we can extend it for at least two more months,” the Turkish minister stressed.

This agreement was reached last summer with the mediation of Turkey and the UN to address the global food crisis exacerbated by the war in Ukraine. Officials from Russia, Ukraine, Turkey and the UN participate in the Istanbul-based Joint Coordination Center (JCC) that implements the agreement.
