The Supreme Court yesterday described his arrest as “invalid and illegal”.
Pakistani court he ordered it to be left free on bail for two weeks o former Prime Minister Imran Khanas his lawyer stated today, after his arrest and the bloody demonstrations it caused.
The arrest, which the Supreme Court called “void and illegal” a day earlier, fueled instability in the country of 220 million at a time of economic crisis, with record inflation, anemic growth and delays in IMF funding.
“They had no authority to arrest me. I was kidnapped. It seems the law of the jungle has prevailed,” Khan told British newspaper The Independent at the Islamabad High Court.
Khan, 70, a former cricket star who later turned to politics, was ousted as prime minister in April 2022 in a no-confidence vote in parliament. According to opinion polls he is the most popular leader in Pakistan.
Violent protests erupted in several cities in Pakistan after his arrest earlier this week by the anti-corruption agency. At least eight people were killed in the violent incidents.
“The Islamabad High Court has set a two-week bail and instructed (the anti-corruption agency) not to arrest Imran Khan during that period,” his lawyer Faisal Chaudhary told Reuters.
Khan was expected to leave the court soon, the ARY network reported, while officials from his Tehreek-e-Insaf (Pakistan Movement for Justice) party expected him to deliver a speech after his release.
