The two countries blame each other for the incidents
New conflicts broke out today on the border between of Armenia and Azerbaijanfor the second day in a row, threatening talks scheduled for the weekend between the leaders of the two Caucasus countries.
Armenia’s Defense Ministry said this afternoon that Azeri forces “fired heavy weapons against Armenian positions near the village of Kut,” in the border region of Gegarkunik. Earlier, the same source announced that the Azerbaijani army “violated the ceasefire” in Sotk (including an Armenian community near the border) using drones.
“Two soldiers of the Armenian armed forces were injured” and one of them is in critical condition, the ministry added.
For its part, Baku accuses Armenian forces of “opening fire with mortar shells (…) against Azeri positions” on the border of the two countries.
On Thursday, an Azeri soldier was killed and four Armenians were wounded in clashes on the border of the two countries that have for three decades claimed the mountainous enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh.
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev are scheduled to meet on Sunday in Brussels for talks under the auspices of the European Union. Pashinyan on Thursday accused Azerbaijan of seeking to “undermine the talks” saying there was “little” chance of a peace deal being signed at that meeting.
The draft agreement “is still at a preliminary stage and it is too early to talk about a possible signature,” he explained.
