The Austrian village of Hallstatt, the favorite destination of many tourists due to its striking resemblance to the kingdom of Arendella in the animated film Frozen, put up a wooden fence to block the view towards the Alps, in protest of the crowd.

“We reacted after the residents’ complaints” of the community, a municipal official, who asked not to be named, told AFP. The work was done last week.

With its traditional, picturesque houses perched on the steep bank, next to a lake with crystal clear waters, and the spire of its church rising into the sky, Hallstatt received nearly a million visitors each year before the Covid-19 pandemic. A “replica” of the village was built in China. It is also very popular in South Korea, thanks to a TV series that featured its name. Hallstatt has been declared a world heritage site by Unesco and is said to have also inspired the kingdom of Aradella.

The fence was put up in the hope that tourists will no longer flock to one of the most popular spots to take selfies – and to silence the residents who were complaining about the noise.
