Macron gave an interview to TF1 television, a day after meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky
The president of France Emmanuel Macron said late Monday that his country had “opened the door” to train Ukrainian pilots to fly fighter jets, and those training programs could begin immediately.
Macron gave an interview to TF1 television, a day after meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Paris. When asked if France will send fighter jets to Ukraine, he replied that this matter was not discussed.
“I didn’t talk about planes, I talked about missiles, I talked about training,” he said, stressing that “there are no taboos” regarding the training of Ukrainian pilots on French aircraft. “I think such discussions are already underway with the Americans,” he continued, without elaborating.
Paris has so far not discussed the possibility of sending fighter jets to Ukraine, explaining that it would take many months of pilot training. The start of this training, however, could, over time, pave the way for the deployment of the planes.
Regarding the weapons that France will provide, Macron did not want to give many details. “We decided to give new ammunition” he limited himself to saying.
According to Macron, “France’s strategy is simple: we help Ukraine to resist, to organize, at the moment it chooses, a counterattack so that it can bring the whole world to the negotiating table, on the terms that will choose for herself, to build a sustainable peace for herself”.
