The Russian Defense Ministry claimed today that it destroyed a US Patriot air defense system in Kiev during early morning Russian attacks on the Ukrainian capital.
“The Armed Forces of the Russian Federation carried out a massive strike with long-range high-precision weapons from the air and sea on the deployment points of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as well as on the storage sites of ammunition, weapons and military equipment delivered by Western countries“, the Russian ministry said in a post on Telegram. “The objective of the attacks was achieved. All items have been hit.”
The Ukrainian military, for its part, declined to comment on the Russian claim, however, Ukraine said it intercepted all 18 Russian missiles fired into the country in the early hours of Tuesday, including six Kinzhal missiles. In fact, as claimed by Kiev, it neutralized the Kremlin’s most powerful hypersonic weapon, shooting down six out of six Kinzhal missiles.
The US is assessing potential damage to the Patriot missile defense system
On the part of the United States official, speaking to CNN, he said that possible damage suffered by the American Patriot system from the massive Russian attacks is being assessed. It will then be decided whether the system should be withdrawn completely or simply repaired in situ by the Ukrainians. He emphasized, however, that it was not completely destroyed.
