‘I’ve never seen, never experienced anything like this’ says Chris Sanchez, member of Prince Harry and Meghan’s security team – ‘No collisions, calls, injuries or arrests reported’ says NYPD
As one “chaotic” a pursuit that he has never experienced before and which could have ended with victims Chris Sanchez, a member of the security team of Prince Harry and Meghan characterizes what happened earlier today in New York to the princely couple, when paparazzi began they are being pursued.
Speaking to CNN, he said the Sussexes were hounded by photographers after leaving the Women’s Foundation awards ceremony, where Meghan was honored for her work, on Tuesday night in New York. However, he clarified that no one was injured and the couple arrived safe, but shocked, at the apartment where they were staying.
“I have never seen, never experienced anything like this. What we were dealing with was very chaotic. There were about a dozen vehicles: cars, scooters and bicycles,” Sanchez told CNN.
“Citizens were in danger In many places. It could have been fatal. They were jumping curbs and red lights. At one point they blocked the limo (carrying the couple) and started taking pictures until we could get out.”he added.
Sanchez said he was “worried” about Prince Harry and Meghan but more so about the public because they (the paparazzi) were so erratic. People were on the sidewalks and crossing streets and (paparazzi) were running red lights. We did everything following the letter of the law,” he added.
Following the incident, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were “scared, exhausted, but relieved to be back”he added.
What the NYPD had to say about the incident
The New York Police Department (NYPD), for its part, reported on the incident, saying that it assisted the Sussexes’ private security on Tuesday afternoon and that “there were a lot of photographers who made their transportation difficult.”
“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have arrived at their destination and no collisions, calls, injuries or arrests reported”said Julian Phillips, NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Public Information.
The police also described the incident as “provocative”.
The statement of the representative of the couple
One of Prince Harry’s representatives addressed the incident, saying that Prince Harry, his wife Meghan and her mother were involved in a “near-disastrous car chase” involving “aggressive” paparazzi.
“Last night the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and Mrs Ragland were involved in a near disastrous chase by a group of very aggressive paparazzi,” Harry’s spokesman said. “This relentless pursuit, which lasted more than two hours, resulted in several near collisions with other drivers on the road, with pedestrians and with two New York City police officers”he added.
City Mayor Eric Adams reported that he was informed that two police officers could have been injured in this incident. “I don’t think there are many who don’t remember how his (Harry’s) mother died. And it would be horrible to lose an innocent bystander during such a chase or have something happen to them.”, he emphasized. The mayor added that he would be more fully informed later, but found it hard to believe that the chase had been going on for two hours, at high speed. “If it’s 10 minutes, a 10-minute chase is extremely dangerous in New York,” write down.
Buckingham Palace has not commented so far. There is also no comment from the foundation that organized the event at which Meghan was awarded.
The couple, who live in California, would live in a private residence in New York. But they decided not to return there, so as not to endanger the safety of their host, their spokesman said.
