Police in Australia have launched an investigation after a 95-year-old woman was seriously injured when officers used a taser on her at the nursing home where she lives.

The 95-year-old woman, who suffers from dementia, is believed to have been spotted wielding a knife at the Yallamboo Lodge nursing home in the town of Cooma, 300km south-west of Sydney, on Wednesday.

Police tried to disarm her before using the taser on her.

She is now fighting for her life in hospital, according to the Daily Telegraph.

NSW Police said it had launched a “serious incident” investigation, the findings of which would be reviewed by an independent authority.

Australia’s state broadcaster ABC reported that the woman was holding a knife when she was tasered.

The nursing home, for its part, confirmed the incident, but declined to make any further comment.

“We will not be making any further comment at this time as the investigation is ongoing and out of respect for everyone involved in the incident,” a spokesman noted.
