Schinas: What is happening on the EU’s external border with Belarus is a brutal hybrid threat

Mr Schoinas began his speech by expressing his condolences on behalf of the European Commission on the loss of the President of the European Parliament, David Sassoli.

“What is happening on our external border with Belarus has nothing to do with the migration crisis, it is a brutal, unprecedented, hybrid threat to the EU,” he added.

According to him, this is a state-led instrumentation by the Lukashenko regime, it must end and the EU response will continue to be uninterrupted. He also noted that the EU’s first priority is humanitarian action, while efforts to speed up returns continue.

For her part, Home Affairs Commissioner Ilva Johansson said that Lukashenko was trying to sell tickets to EU territory through instrumentalization and that this was unacceptable.

“It’s important that we do this and we did it the right way, but it is also important to say that even in a state of disarray, people have the right to apply for asylum,” she added.
