The president of France Emmanuel Macron and the prime minister of Italy Georgia Meloni met today at Hiroshimaon the sidelines of the G7 summit, in an attempt to turn the page, after the tension caused by the statements of a French minister who accused Rome of ineffective management of migration flows.
The Minister of the Interior of France Gerald Darmanen he said in early May that Meloni’s government had proved unable to solve the immigration problem, even though it had promised to do so during the campaign and that it had lied to voters that it could end the immigration crisis.
Rome demanded an apology from the Paris.
In today’s meeting the two leaders looked relaxed and Macron appeared to ask Meloni about the flooding in northern Italy this week.
Meloni will leave the summit a day early to return to Italy and lead disaster relief efforts.
Briefing journalists about this meeting, an official of the French presidency said that the two leaders discussed Ukraine as well as immigration and Tunisia. “There was a broad discussion that showed the convergence of our views on important issues, mainly regarding Ukraine but also Tunisia,” said the source. Macron and Meloni agreed that Tunisia needed financial support to stabilize the situation and limit migration flows to the north, he added.
