The president of Russia Vladimir Putin congratulated Russian forces on capturing the city of Bakhmut, in eastern Ukraine.

As reported by the Reuters agency citing Russian media, the powerful man of the Kremlin announced that those distinguished in the operation to capture Bakhmut will receive honors.

Earlier, the Ministry of Defense in Moscow had announced that the Ukrainian city was now under the control of Russian forces. “As a result of the offensive actions by Wagner’s units, supported by artillery and aviation (…) the liberation of Artyomovsk was completed,” the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement, referring to the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut with the name it had era of the Soviet Union.

As of midday Saturday, the head of the Russian mercenary organization Wagner, Yevgeny Prigozhin, claimed that his forces had captured the town of Bakhmut, a claim denied by the Ukrainian Defense Ministry.

Prigozhin has admitted that Bakhmut – a town that had a population of 70,000 before the war – was not of strategic importance, but took on huge symbolic importance due to the intensity of the fighting and heavy casualties on both sides.
