At least four people drowned and others four were hospitalized after the capsize of a ship in river ganges, in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

More than 20 passengers were rescued by boats that rushed to help.

The accident occurred earlier today in Ballia district, about 400 kilometers southeast of Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh state.

“Today a boat carrying villagers capsized in the Ganges River. The passengers were going to a trade fair. Four bodies were recovered from the waters of the river. “Four rescued people were taken to a hospital.” a local official said. According to him, there were 30 people on the boat.

Other accounts put the number on board at least 50 and there are fears that the death toll could rise.

Boat capsizing is common in rural India, where safety checks are lax, resulting in overcrowding on boats.
