THE Minister of Defense of Poland Marius Blaszczak announced the acquisition today modern submarines for strengthening the Navy of his country.

“We plan to start the process of buying submarines and acquiring the necessary technology before the end of the year,” the Polish defense minister told a conference in Warsaw today. He clarified that details regarding the number of submarines to be acquired, as well as their technical characteristics, will be made public in the next period.

The Polish Navy currently has one Soviet-built submarine, which was launched in 1985. “Orzel” required repairs 10 times in two years (2020-2021) and is not eligible for more, according to Polish reports.

According to earlier information, among the candidate contractors are the French Naval, the Spanish Navantia, the Swedish Saab Kockums and the German ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems.

Poland, a member of the European Union and NATO, is modernizing its armed forces amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine, while it is a strategic hub for the delivery of Western military aid to Kiev.
