Three people were killed and five others were wounded Saturday in an exchange of gunfire during a motorcycle ride in the southwestern New Mexico city of Red River, police said.

Motorcyclists began exchanging gunfire on the mountain town’s main road, about 120 miles northeast of the state capital Santa Fe, during the annual Memorial Day motorcycle parade, Red River Mayor Linda Calhoun said by phone. Reuters news.

“They were members of a motorcycle gang,” Ms. Calhoun said, declining to give more details about their identities. “They were all from elsewhere,” he added.

Some 28,000 motorcyclists were expected to take part in the march, which includes concerts and memorial services in the nearby town of Angel Fire.

Some of the injured were taken to a hospital in Taos, 25 miles (40 km) to the southwest, state police said on Twitter.

The city government in Taos banned the sale of alcohol and imposed a curfew after the bloody incident.
