Lavrov signaled that the deal was in danger of collapsing unless the UN deal with Moscow was fulfilled
Russia said today that its agreement Black Sea for the grain transportation it will no longer be able to operate unless the United Nations agreement with Moscow to overcome barriers to Russian grain and fertilizer exports is fulfilled.
“If everything stays as it is, and it looks like it will stay, then it will be necessary to move on from the fact that (the deal) is no longer functional,” said the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on a visit to Nairobi.
The agreement reached last July provides that the United Nations will help Russia overcome any obstacles to its own grain and fertilizer exports for three years. Lavrov stated that the agreement is not being fulfilled.
The UN-Russia deal was reached alongside a deal allowing the safe Black Sea export of food and fertilizer from Ukraine following Russia’s invasion of the country in February 2022.
This month Moscow reluctantly agreed to extend the Black Sea accord for an additional two months, until July 17, but said more progress needed to be made to advance its own interests.
Lavrov said less than 3 percent of grain exported under the deal has reached the world’s poorest countries.
