The trial of one Iranian journalistwho was arrested after covering up her death in September Mahsa Aminiwhich caused a great movement of questioning in the country, began today, her lawyer announced.

Elaheh Mohammadi, aged 36, appeared before a Tehran court for the first hearing of her trial, which began behind closed doors.

Her lawyer, Sahab Mirlohi, described this meeting as “positive”, without giving details of what was shared. He clarified to AFP that the date of the next hearing “will be announced later”.

Elaheh Mohammadi, a reporter for Ham Nihan newspaper, is one of two journalists jailed for covering the September 16 death of Mahsha Amini, a young woman who was arrested by the morality police, who accused her of violating the dress code of the Islamic Republic by not wearing her headscarf properly.

The journalist was arrested on September 29 after going to Saguez (Kurdistan province) where the funeral was held and where one of the first demonstrations took place.

Her colleague Niloufar Hamedi, 30, of the reformist newspaper Sarg, had been arrested a few days earlier after going to the hospital where Mahsa Amini was in a coma before she died.

The trial of this journalist is to begin tomorrow, Tuesday, the judicial authority had announced last week.

The two journalists were charged on November 8 with “propaganda” against the Islamic Republic and conspiracy against national security, offenses punishable by death.

Hundreds of people, including members of the order’s forces, were killed and thousands arrested during protests that took place in October and November. Seven men have been executed for involvement in this movement.
