US authorities are considering “additional measures” such as sanctions or restrictions on entry into US territory
Uganda’s anti-gay law is a “tragic violation” of human rights and should be repealed, the US president said on Monday joe biden, citing potential consequences to United States aid and investment to that country.
The US president clarified that he has asked his agencies to study the consequences of this “disgraceful” law on “all aspects of cooperation between the United States and Uganda”, mainly in aid and investment, including the ability of the US to provide safely services under the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and other forms of aid and investment, according to a statement.
Passing this law “undermines the prospects for meaningful economic growth for the entire country,” Biden added, calling for its “immediate withdrawal.”
American authorities are considering “additional measures” such as sanctions or restrictions on entry into US territory for “any person linked to human rights abuses or corruption cases,” the Democratic president added.
The law, which has outraged human rights groups, provides for heavy penalties for same-sex relationships and the “promotion” of homosexuality.
“No one should ever have to fear for their life, or experience violence and discrimination. This is unacceptable,” Biden said.
Same-sex sex was already banned in Uganda, as it is in more than 30 African countries, but the new law provides severe penalties for members of the LGBTI+ community.
