An officer of Iran’s armed forces said the country wants to strengthen the anti-aircraft defense of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s army, the FARS news agency reported on Monday.

In an interview with the agency, General Said Hamza Qalandari explained that although Syria already has anti-aircraft defense capabilities, Tehran will support the “Syrian brothers” with equipment and regular upgrades.

According to the general, the aim is to counter Israel’s repeated incursions into Syria.

Along with Syria, Iran is Syria’s most important ally.

Tehran has been expanding its political and military influence in the region since the 1990s, supporting in particular Shiite armed organizations, creating a “resistance” network.

Officially, Iran has simply sent military “advisors” to Syria. However, the Shiite armed groups it supports, particularly units of the Shiite movement Hezbollah in Lebanon, have played a role in the war in the country.
