Two Italian secret service agents and a retired Israeli security force were among the of four victims of the tragedy on Lake Maggiore in northern Italyaccording to local officials.
The victims were identified as 62-year-old Claudio Alonzi and 53-year-old Tiziana Barnobi.
The Israeli was identified as 50-year-old Shimoni Erez. Anya Bozhkova, the 50-year-old Russian wife of the boat’s captain, also died.
The boat with more than 20 tourists and crew sank due to strong winds.
According to Italian media, the boat was carrying around 25 people when a storm broke out over the lake, which later turned into a “small hurricane”.
The 16-meter-long boat capsized and sank on Sunday night between the towns of Sesto Calende and Arona. All on board fell into the water, but many of the passengers swam to shore or were rescued by other vessels.
Video showed chairs and other debris floating in the stormy waters. Five people were taken to hospital.
Lake Maggiore – on the southern side of the Alps – is located on the border of Italy and Switzerland and is a popular destination for tourists.
