Gunmen killed a Jewish settler in the occupied West Bank today, Israeli authorities said, and a Palestinian militant group linked to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah faction claimed responsibility.

The West Bank, one of the territories where Palestinians seek to establish their state, has seen a sharp increase in violence since March 2022, with Israel stepping up military raids following a wave of attacks on the streets of its cities.

The resident of Hermes settlement, about six kilometers from the West Bank border with Israel, was shot while driving his car nearby, settlement leader Yossi Dagan said in a statement.

According to health officials, he was about 30 years old. The hospital where he was treated announced his death.

Israel’s Defense Ministry said investigations are underway to arrest the gunmen. The Fatah-affiliated Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades said they carried out the attack to avenge the killing of Palestinians by Israel.

“This and other operations to come will not be the final answer to assuage our pain for the death of our martyrs. Our pain is greater, so is our revenge,” the Brigades said in a statement.
