The American president Biden will visit the White House next week the prime minister of the united kingdom Rishi Sunak for talks on the war in Ukraine, supply chains and the transition to zero emissions.

It will be Mr Sunak’s first official trip to Washington since he became prime minister in October.

The invitation was extended by Mr Biden on the sidelines of the AUKUS tripartite summit in California in March to announce the submarine grant agreement to Australia.

A spokesman for the British Prime Minister described the trip as “an opportunity for the two leaders to build on the talks they have had in recent months to strengthen the level of cooperation and coordination between the UK and the US on the economic challenges that will define our future, including protecting our supply chains and of the transition to zero-pollution economies”.

He added that it will also be an opportunity to discuss continued support for Ukraine ahead of the NATO summit.

The prospect of a bilateral free trade agreement between the two countries is not expected to be on the agenda, despite Mr Sunak’s predecessors talking about a deal as a result of Brexit.

The Downing Street spokesman noted that the bilateral trade relationship is already the UK’s biggest in value at £279bn a year.
