95-year-old Rosalyn Carter has fought for decades against the stigma that accompanies mental health issues. Her family expressed hope that by sharing the former first lady’s diagnosis with the world, it will “increase important conversations at the family dinner table and in doctors’ offices across the country” about similar issues.
The Carters married in 1946 and had four children. They lived in the White House for only four years, between 1977-81.
Jimmy Carter, who is 98 years old, has faced many health problems in recent years. Since February he has decided to discontinue his medical care and is only receiving palliative care at home. He is the longest-serving former US president in the country’s history.
