London Thanasis Gavos

The British government has decided to defy the deadline set by the head of the independent inquiry into the handling of the pandemic to hand over all the messages and notes of then Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Lady Hallett had demanded from the relevant Cabinet Office the delivery of the messages in their entirety and without deleted passages by Thursday afternoon, warning that otherwise the government would be committing a criminal offence.

The Cabinet Office has informed Baroness Hallett that it is “with regret” requesting a legal inquiry into the validity of her request.

According to the government, “significant issues of principle are at stake.”

Downing Street sources have said in the past few days that if all the messages exchanged by Boris Johnson in those crucial months were handed over, then free communication between members of the government would be undermined.

However, on Wednesday a spokesman for Mr Johnson announced that the messages had been delivered by him to the Cabinet Office and that he was requesting their delivery to Lady Hallett.
