At least 50 have been killed and more than 300 injured after two trains collided and one derailed in Odisha’s Balasore district.

The rescue operation is underway and “every possible assistance” is being provided to the victims, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced.

It is a “serious accident,” a senior West Bengal official told reporters. South Eastern Railway officials, who asked not to be named, expressed fears that the death toll would be high.

The Coromandel Express derailed and its carriages fell onto the adjacent track. Many of the passengers were trapped in the wreckage.

“I cannot comment on the details and casualty count at this time. I was in Delhi and rushing to the accident site,” said Archana Joshi, the general manager of South Eastern Railways.
