It is the leftist president’s first official visit to the Asian giant since the two states formally established diplomatic relations in March.
Mrs. Castro’s government decided the country should sever ties with Taiwan and approach China in search of investment and jobs.
Foreign Minister Eduardo Enrique Reyna explained to journalists at the opening ceremony of the Chinese embassy in Tegucigalpa that the visit will last four days.
Ms Castro’s visit to the world’s second-largest economy follows an invitation extended to her by her Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, state media Poder Popular reported earlier yesterday.
Last month, Mr. Reyna announced that the two governments would start “soon” talks on trade and added that the first Honduran product to begin exporting to the Chinese market.
Yesterday, the head of Honduran diplomacy said that several “cooperation agreements” would be signed during Mrs. Castro’s visit, without being more specific.
