Britain will host the world’s first artificial intelligence (AI) security summit later this year and Rishi Sunak will discuss the technologies with US President Joe Biden at their meeting in Washington today, it was announced on Wednesday. from the US capital the British Prime Minister.
“Artificial intelligence has an incredible power to transform our lives for the better. But we have to make sure that it is developed and used completely safely,” Sunak said on the sidelines of a visit to the White House, where he is expected to meet today with American president.
“Throughout history we have not stopped creating new revolutionary technologies that we have used for the good of humanity. This is what we must do again,” he added.
The summit is expected to take place next autumn and bring together “like-minded countries” to lay the groundwork for an arrangement, a spokesman for the British prime minister said.
The summit will examine the risks of artificial intelligence and discuss how they can be mitigated through coordinated action internationally, the British government said in a statement, which did not specify a date.
Biden and Sunak, who will meet today for the fourth time in as many months, will work to coordinate their approaches to critical and emerging technologies with the aim of strengthening their economic security, British and US officials said.
Sunak plans to hold extensive talks with Biden about the U.K.-U.S. relationship and ways the two countries can work together to strengthen their economies and establish “shared leadership in the technologies of the future,” the British government also noted.
Some governments are looking at ways to mitigate the risks of the emerging technology, which has seen a boom in investment and popularity among consumers lately following the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT app.
Among them is China, where the government is seeking to introduce artificial intelligence regulations, according to billionaire Elon Musk, who met with Chinese officials during his recent trip to the country.
Regulators worldwide are trying to draw up rules for the use of generative artificial intelligence, which can generate text and images, and its impact has been compared by its devotees to the arrival of the internet.
