Britain announced a new package of sanctions against Belarus today for its role in facilitating Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, including import bans and new measures aimed at preventing online propaganda.

Belarus, led by President Alexander Lukashenko since 1994, is Russia’s staunchest ally among the former Soviet states and allowed its territory to be used to launch the Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Last month Russia moved forward with its decision to deploy tactical nuclear weapons on Belarusian soil.

“The new package increases economic pressure on Lukashenko and his regime which actively facilitates the Russian war effort and ignores the territorial integrity of Ukraine,” British Foreign Secretary James Cleverley said in a statement.

The new package includes banning imports of gold, cement, timber and rubber products from Belarus and blocking exports to Belarus from Britain of banknotes and machinery, as well as products, technologies and materials that can be used in the manufacture of chemical and biological weapons.

Britain said it would also be able to prevent certain Belarusian media outlets from “spreading propaganda in the UK” with social media companies and internet service providers restricting access to websites of sanctioned Belarusian media groups.

The British government will also crack down on those who circumvent the sanctions, such as reducing the amount of capital Belarus can raise by further restricting the country’s access to British financial markets.
