The Ukrainian attacks in its southern region Zaporizhia continue, Russian officials and military bloggers report, speaking of heavy fighting in the area.

They say Ukrainian troops – backed by tanks, artillery and drones – are trying to advance south of the city of Orekhiv for the second night in a row.

A senior Ukrainian defense official said the enemy was on “active defense”.

Several military experts have said that the focus of Ukraine’s long-awaited counteroffensive will start from Zaporizhia, and emphasize that Kiev is trying to regain access to the Sea of Azov.

Earlier on Thursday, the US-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW) said Ukraine’s long-awaited counter-offensive has already begun. However, Kiev did not confirm the news. Ukrainian officials, however, insist that even when the counterattack begins they will not make an official announcement and warned that the fighting should not be concentrated in a single area.

Russia has long anticipated a Ukrainian counterattack in this direction, building multi-layered defenses around this frontline area.
