The Colombian government and the far-left rebels of the National Liberation Army (ELN) signed a temporary six-month ceasefire agreement in Havana today.

The agreement for this “bilateral, national and temporary truce” was signed in the presence of Colombian President Gustavo Petro and ELN leader Antonio Garcia, as announced by Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez.

The ceasefire will take effect on August 3 and will last for 180 days.

The deal is good news for President Petros, whose planned political and social reforms are threatened by allegations of financial irregularities in his election campaign.

After assuming the presidency, Petro presented an ambitious plan for “total peace” in Colombia, a country torn by armed, civil strife for decades.

The Havana negotiations had broken down in mid-May after Petro questioned the unity of the ELN leadership.
