At 92, he decided to hand over the reins – Alexander Soros says he wants to be more involved in US affairs than his father
The American billionaire George Soros passes control of his empire to his son Alexander Soroswhose main concern will be to fight against the possibility of Donald Trump’s return to power, according to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ).
A black sheep of the extreme conservatives and a target of anti-Semitic attacks, George Soros began in the 1980s the creation of a network of foundations (Open society foundations” or OSF) that invests around the world to support a variety of causes, from reforms to the economy and justice to the rights of minorities and refugees and freedom of expression.
At the age of 92, he decided to hand over the reins to one of his sons, 37-year-old Alexander.
In an interview published today in Wall Street Journalthe successor to George Soros explains that he is “more political” than his father and that he is troubled by the idea that Donald Trump might be re-elected to the White House in 2024.
“I’d love for money to play less of a role in politics, but as long as the other side does, we should keep doing it,” Alexander Soros told the WSJ.
Under his leadership, OSF will continue on the same path – supporting democracies, political figures of the American left, etc — but will also add other goals, such as advocating for abortion rights and gender equality.
Alexander Soros was elected chairman of the foundation’s board in December and has since directed the network’s political activities, which have been concentrated in the “super PAC,” a scheme that donates funds to the election campaigns of political candidates.
He is the only family member who sits on its investment committee Soros Fund Managementthe company that oversees the allocation of resources, according to the WSJ.
Alexander Soros says he wants to be involved in US affairs more than his father. He supports programs that encourage Hispanic and black voters to exercise their right to vote and calls on elected officials who belong to the Democratic Party to improve their communication.
“Our camp needs to look more patriotic and inclusive. Just because someone votes for Trump doesn’t mean they’re a loser or a racist,” he explains.
Originally known for his investing and profit-making activities, George Soros has devoted his money to advocating for his ideas, from the fight against apartheid in South Africa to supporting people fighting for democracy in dictatorial regimes.
