Iran test-fired an unmanned, remote-controlled kamikaze aircraft in the Gulf and launched another missile or drone without warning ships sailing in the area, a US official said.

The kamikaze drone was launched from Iran’s Yask region on Wednesday and hit a training barge 8-9 miles inside Iranian territorial waters, the source said, citing US intelligence.

“They’re basically practicing hitting merchant ships. That’s the only reason they would do this in the Gulf of Oman.”he said.

The US accuses Iran of engaging in a series of attacks against merchant ships in the Gulf since 2019, an area through which some of the world’s most important oil and shipping routes pass.

From time to time, Iran tests explosives or kamikaze drones and broadcasts footage of these tests.

“The nearest merchant ship was about 30 miles from the barge, but it was still dangerous” the test, the official added.
