The 46-year-old US ambassador to Hungary, David Pressman, who is openly gay, said in a speech that Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s practices put vulnerable people at risk.
The US ambassador to Hungary today denounced the country’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s “homophobic” and “opportunistic” policies which he said put vulnerable people at risk.
“LGBTQI people are under attack everywhere in the world, including in Hungary,” David Pressman, 46, said in his speech at the Budapest Pride March. “We believe that violence and homophobic policies are driven by opportunism, not belief, but that doesn’t stop them from doing harm,” he added.
Ambassador Pressman is openly gay and frequently denounces the Hungarian government for its rights policy. He even challenged today “the media controlled by the government” to cover “in its entirety” his speech.
At the end of May, the Hungarian parliament repealed a controversial article of a law that targeted LGBTQI people and gave the green light for anyone to anonymously report those who “challenge” the constitutional definition of marriage, family and gender. It was to amend a 2014 law passed in April that expanded the areas in which citizens can make complaints to the authorities.
Since 2018, Hungary has banned gender studies while not allowing gender changes in registers, nor adoption by same-sex couples. A 2021 law also bans talking about transgenderism or homosexuality to minors. The European Union has launched an infringement procedure against Hungary, with the support of 15 countries.
