Kahovka Reservoir has been dismantled, with 95,000 tonnes of dead fish and dolphin carcasses lying on the Black Sea coasts of Bulgaria and Turkey
The ecological disaster is enormous which has been caused after the explosion of the Nova Kahovka dam, with the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Andriy Yermak, asking Russia to account for the huge consequences that have been caused.
Oil spills weighing at least 150 tons are drifting along the Dnipro River and “may reach the Mediterranean,” according to Yermak.
The Kahovka reservoir has been dismantled, with 95,000 tons of dead fish and dolphin carcasses lying on the Black Sea coasts of Bulgaria and Turkey, he said.
At the same time, he pointed out that the flood from the breach of the dam will have significant environmental effects and predicts that “at least half (of the forests) will die”. The flooded area was home to 20,000 wild animals.
Yermak also said that about 124,000 hectares of forest in Ukraine have been flooded.
The Ukrainian Ministry of Agriculture has in recent days expressed strong concern over the incident at the Nova Kakhovka dam, claiming that its collapse flooded around 25,000 hectares of agricultural land.
Ukraine’s health ministry on Monday urged residents not to swim and fish in the waters of Odesa, Mykolayiv and Kherson regions as dangerous infectious organisms such as salmonella, rotavirus, worm eggs and E. coli have been detected in the water.
