Lacoste: Djokovic’s main sponsor wants to discuss what happened in Australia

by

Hours after the deportation of unvaccinated Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic from Australia, the French clothing company Lacoste, his main sponsor, officially took a stand on the case, which sparked international interest and diplomatic friction between Serbia and Australia.

Lacoste announced on Monday that it wanted to “look into” the events that sparked a nearly two-week legal battle that prevented the unvaccinated Serb from defending his Australian Open title. Australia requires international visitors to be vaccinated against Covid-19 unless they have a medical exception.

“We will contact Novak Djokovic as soon as possible to look into all the facts surrounding his presence in Australia,” the company said in a statement.

“We wish everyone a great tournament and thank the organizers for all their efforts to ensure that the tournament is held in good conditions for players, staff and spectators,” the French company added.

According to CNN, this is the first official placement of a sponsor of “Nole” since the beginning of the series with the cancellation of the tennis player’s visa in Australia, in the context of the Australian Open.

The number one tennis player in the world will theoretically have the opportunity to break the record of the men’s grand slam at the French Open in May, but the events in Australia have raised questions about how the unvaccinated players will play.

In addition to Lacoste, French carmaker Peugeot, another sponsor of the Serbian tennis player, declined to comment on Monday. Swiss watchmaker Hublot and Japanese sportswear giant Asics (ASCCF) also did not comment on Djokovic.
