A tornado ripped through the north Texas town of Matador on Wednesday, killing four people and injuring many others, while at least a dozen buildings were damaged.

The “unprecedented” tornado was accompanied by powerful wind gusts that flattened the small community of 600 residents, according to the Lubbock Fire Department, one of several agencies involved in search and rescue operations in the area.

At least ten people were taken to hospitals and one of them succumbed to his injuries, police said in a press conference Thursday morning.

Footage from the area shows flattened houses and downed power poles. Nearly 25 emergency services vehicles helped illuminate the dark road in this video released by the fire department in neighboring Lubbock.

Most customers in Motley County are without power, according to the specialized website PowerOutage.us. Matador is the county seat, and power outages were reported up to 200 kilometers south of the city. Power is expected to be restored by Friday afternoon because a substation was destroyed by the tornado.

Last week, Perryton, Texas was hit by tornadoes that killed at least three people and injured dozens more.
