German tabloid Bild, Europe’s biggest-selling newspaper, is laying off hundreds of editors to be replaced by artificial intelligence.

Axel Springer SE, Europe’s largest publishing house, has announced that it will replace a number of editorial tasks with artificial intelligence (AI). In an email sent to staff on Monday, June 19, Springer advised that it “sadly will be parting ways with colleagues whose services can be replaced by AI. Thus, proofreaders, secretaries and photo editors will no longer exist as they do today.”

Job cuts at publishing house Springer, home of news brands such as Bild and Die Welt, have sparked fears that artificial intelligence will affect the entire world’s media industry. Chatbots like ChatGPT could be used to write news, making human journalists obsolete.

The Reuters Institute Digital News Report has declared 2023 “the breakthrough year for artificial intelligence and its application in journalism.” He says AI transcription tools are already routine in newsrooms, with many also using them to select stories to recommend to users, generate captions and convert text to speech.

Some media companies are experimenting with virtual news anchors. And apps like Artifact already provide readers with AI-generated summaries of online news.
