Tragic story of Pakistani tycoon and son aboard Titan submarine – ‘He was terrified’ Suleman says his aunt
It shocks the story of father and son aboard the fateful submarine Titan.
As the 19-year-old’s aunt revealed Suleman Dawood the young man decided to accompany Shahzada Dawood’s Pakistani father on this daring journey, as a gift for Father’s Day which were celebrated on Sunday 18 June.
In the days before the Titan craft entered the ocean off Newfoundland, Canada, the 19-year-old student accompanying his father on the mission expressed reluctance to gohis aunt said in an interview Thursday.
Azmeh Dawood – the elder sister of Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood – said pNBC News that her nephew, Suleman, informed a relative that she “didn’t really want to” and felt “terrified” about the trip to explore the wreckage of the Titanic.
But the 19-year-old ended up on OceanGate’s 22-foot submarine because the trip took place over Father’s Day weekend and he was eager to please his dad, who was passionate about Titanic knowledge, according to Azmeh.
“I think of Suleman, who is 19 years old, in there, who might be gasping for breath …,” Azme said in a telephone interview from her home in Amsterdam.
She was devastated on Thursday when OceanGate, the company behind the Titan mission, confirmed that all five passengers were presumed dead. The US Coast Guard said debris in the search area was consistent with a “catastrophic explosion”.
“It’s an unreal situation.” Azmeh said, speaking through sobs, mentioning that the past four days had been painful. As she said, she was glued to the TV news coverage of the Titan sighting, and she feared the worst.
“I feel like I was watching a really bad movie, counting down, but I didn’t know what you count down to,” he said.
Azmeh and Shahzada are scions of one of the most prominent corporate dynasties in Pakistan. The family’s eponymous business empire, Dawood Hercules Corp., has investments in agriculture, healthcare and other industries.
Shahzada was vice-chairman of Karachi-based Engro Corporation and a consultant to Prince’s Trust International, a charity founded by King Charles III.
