Prince Andrew’s ex-wife, Duchess of York Sarah (Fergie) Ferguson has undergone surgery after being diagnosed with breast cancer, PEOPLE magazine has confirmed.

“Sarah, Duchess of York was recently diagnosed with an early form of breast cancer which was detected during a routine mammogram. She was told she would have to undergo surgery, which was carried out successfully,” said a spokesman for the former daughter-in-law of Queen Elizabeth.

“The duchess is receiving the best medical care and her doctors have said her prognosis is good. She is now recovering with her family,” continued the spokesperson, who said she was hospitalized for 5 days at London’s “King Edward VII” hospital.

“The Duchess wishes to express her immense gratitude to all the medical staff who have supported her over the past few days. She is also extremely grateful to the staff involved in the mammogram for spotting her disease, which was otherwise symptom-free, and believes that her experience highlights the importance of regular screening,” he concluded.

Sarah Ferguson just before going into surgery recorded a new episode of her podcast ‘Tea Talks’ which will be released today.

She married Prince Andrew, Queen Elizabeth’s third child, on July 23, 1986, at Westminster Cathedral. After having two daughters, they divorced in 1996.
