Twelve dead are the toll of a head-on bus collision in the eastern Indian state of Odisha. The accident occurred near the town of Digapahandi, about 200 kilometers southwest of Bhubaneswar (the state capital).

“Earlier today, a private bus carrying wedding reception guests collided head-on with a city bus near Digapahandi, killing 12 people and injuring seven others,” a police spokesman said.

The private bus was carrying relatives and friends of the newlyweds, who were returning home after the wedding reception, according to Indian media reports.

Chief Minister of Odisha, Naveen Patnaikexpressed his deepest sorrow for the fatal accident and announced that compensation of 3,350 euros will be given to the family of each victim and 335 euros to each injured person.

In India an estimated 150,000 people die each year in road accidents (on average, one death every four minutes). The government has set a target of reducing the number of victims by 50% by 2024.
