Mural which represents something that could have been her ancestor Italian pizza was discovered on the wall of a house in Pompeiias announced today by the Italian Ministry of Culture.

Archaeologists believe the pie, seen in the mural next to a glass of wine, may have been eaten garnished with fruits such as pomegranates or dates, or with spices and a type of pesto sauce, the ministry said.

While not technically a pizza, since it lacks classic ingredients like tomato and mozzarella, what was found in Pompeii “may be the distant ancestor” of modern pizza, according to the statement.

Pompeii, destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius nearly 2,000 years ago, is located just 23 km from Naples, the modern city that is the birthplace of Italian pizza, a food that belongs to the world cultural heritage and is protected by Unesco .

The mural was discovered in the dining room of a house next to a bakery, which had been partially excavated in the 19th century and where excavations resumed in January, the culture ministry said.

The site of Pompeii, discovered in the 16th century, has recently seen a flurry of archaeological activity after years of decline and neglect, thanks mainly to a €105m project funded by the European Union.
