What the head of Ukrainian diplomacy said to the secretary general of the Atlantic Alliance
“The time has come for clarity” on Ukraine’s NATO membership, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba told NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg today, two weeks ahead of a NATO summit in Vilnius.
“Ukraine continues to actively work with NATO allies to convince them that the time has come for clarity on its entry into the Alliance,” Ukraine’s foreign minister tweeted after a phone call with Jens Stoltenberg.
During our call today, I commended @JensStoltenberg for his efforts to make the NATO summit in Vilnius a success. Ukraine continues to work actively with all NATO allies to convince them that the time for clarity on Ukraine’s membership in the Alliance has come.

Ukraine is constantly asking to join NATO when the war ends.
Yesterday, Volodymyr Zelenskiy demanded concrete moves from NATO during the Vilnius summit (July 11 and 12).
“We are a responsible state and we understand that we cannot join NATO in time of war. But we must be sure that after the war we will be,” said the president of Ukraine.
NATO allies are still searching for a common line on the security guarantees they are prepared to offer to Kiev, apart from the issue of membership itself.
On June 17, US President Joe Biden warned that “no, Ukraine will not get favorable treatment for joining NATO.”
Ukraine should “fulfill all the criteria. Well, we won’t make it easy for him,” he told reporters.
NATO member countries must agree on a clear path for Ukraine’s accession during the NATO summit, Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kalas said today.
“The only security guarantee that really works and the cheapest security guarantee that really works is joining NATO,” the Estonian prime minister told reporters as she arrived at the European summit in Brussels.
In Lithuania, Ukraine will not be invited to join the Alliance, Jens Stoltenberg has warned, but there is an intention in NATO to convene the first meeting of the new NATO-Ukraine Council with Volodymyr Zelensky.
