As there are processes to tighten the EU’s line with regard to immigration, the relevant debate is ongoing in Brussels.
Europe has been divided into three camps regarding migratory as 14 countries, including Greece and Italy, want a tougher line for border protection.
As there are processes to tighten the EU’s line with regard to immigration, the relevant debate is ongoing in Brussels.
This is a long and difficult debate as the opinions expressed within the council are conflicting.
The countries that defend the hardest line in terms of migration in particular, are asking for stricter formulations and decisions regarding mainly the external dimension of Europe’s migration policy.
In particular, they call for greater protection of the EU’s external borders, more effective strategies to combat traffickers’ networks and cooperation with third countries outside the Union to manage asylum requests.
Beyond that, some countries such as Luxembourg, Germany and Portugal are asking for more weight in terms of international law and human rights protection.
As a third camp, the countries Poland and Hungary are defined, which have always rejected any proposal regarding the EU’s common approach to the management of immigration, mainly at the level of solidarity, and indeed “bear heavily” the fact that a few weeks ago, decisions were made without their consent.
In any case, no major decisions are expected at this stage.
