At least seven workers were killed when a six-storey building under construction collapsed in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, on Saturday.

It was around noon when workers reported hearing creaking noises, and a short time later the structure collapsed, crushing several of them, said foreman Jourdain Giroud. “We started running… Within 45 seconds, the building collapsed,” he said.

Nine people were injured and taken to hospital, said the head of the Fire Department who rushed to the scene.

Construction of the building began without a building permit, the French News Agency (AFP) reported, citing government sources. In recent years, Abidjan has seen a large increase in construction activity, but in several cases without permits, thus contributing to unregulated construction.

In the space of two weeks in February and March, 13 people were killed by building collapses in Abidjan. Government spokesman Amandou Coulibaly then expressed his sadness at the ongoing violations of building and urban planning regulations and underlined the government’s commitment to intensifying controls and imposing stricter penalties on violators.
