THE Organization of Islamic Cooperation announced today that collective measures need to be taken to prevent acts of desecration Koran and how international law should be used to stop religious hatred, following the burning of a holy book during a protest in Sweden.
The statement by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, most of whose 57 member states have Muslim-majority populations, was issued after an emergency meeting in Jeddah, of Saudi Arabia which was convened to discuss Wednesday’s episode.
“We must send constant reminders to the international community regarding the urgent application of international law, which clearly prohibits any support for religious hatred,” said the Organization’s Secretary-General Hissine Brahim Taha.
A man tore up and burned a copy of the Koran outside its main mosque Stockholm on Wednesday, the first day of the Muslim celebration of Eid al-Adha. This act enraged her Turkeya member country of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, whose support Sweden needs to join the NATO military alliance.
The Swedish police had given permission for the protest to take place. However, after the burning of the Koran, police charged the man who did it with incitement against an ethnic or national group.
The episode sparked large protests in Baghdad in front of the Swedish embassy. He was also condemned by the US.
