Peru prepares to preach emergency situation, as the Ubinas volcano roars

Its principles Peru are preparing to declare a state of emergency in the area around Ubinas, in the Moquegua region (south), the prime minister of the Andean state, Alberto Otarola, said yesterday Monday, as the crater of the country’s most active volcano has been spewing ash for days .

The National Civil Protection Institute (INDECI) said in a press release that the alert level in the area was raised to “orange”, from “yellow”, as the ash has reached a height of 1,700 meters from the crater.

In southern Peru, where important mines are located, they are located over ten active volcanoes.

The Latin American country is also located on the so-called “ring of fire” of the Pacific Ocean, where intense seismic and volcanic activity is recorded.

The Prime Minister Otarola told reporters that a state of emergency would be declared in the next few days so that “the necessary preventive measures” could be taken to protect the residents of the area.

The Civil Protection advised about 2,000 residents to stay away from the volcano and to tightly close the windows and doors of the houses. Masks and protective glasses were distributed to the population, according to local authorities.

In 2019, Peruvian authorities evacuated hundreds of residents from areas near Ubinas following volcanic eruptions and ash emissions.
