Sanctions make Russia stronger said Russian President Vladimir Putin during an online summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

Mr Putin supported trade deals between SCO countries in local currencies, which are seen as an effort to ease sanctions.

He added that more than 80% of trade between Chinese and Russians was in rubles and yuan and urged other SCO members to follow the same process.

The SCO was formed in 2001 by China and Russia with the participation of former Soviet republics of Central Asia – Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan. India and Pakistan later joined the bloc. Its aim is to oppose Western influence in the Eurasian region. The 2023 SCO summit is being held under the leadership of India.
